Clay pots, drainage, and plants that forgive

Terracotta planters with green plants on a shelf

Priya Raman · 27 March 2026

A plant dies in a pretty pot for a boring reason: the roots sit in water. Terracotta is still worth buying because the clay itself pulls moisture outward. That is not a style preference. It is how the material behaves, and it suits plants that would rather be a little dry than a little drowned.

The hole is not optional

A planter without drainage is a cachepot. You can drop a nursery pot inside it, but you should not fill it with soil and hope. The terracotta pots in the outdoor edit have a hole and a saucer. Indoors, empty the saucer after watering. Outdoors, the saucer can stay if the rain is light, and it should come off if a storm is going to leave the pot standing in a puddle.

A pale bloom on the outside of the clay is minerals from the water. It is not mould by default, and it is not a defect. If you dislike it, a stiff brush and dry weather will quiet it. Sealing the pot to stop the bloom also stops the breath that made terracotta useful.

Choose a plant that matches the pot

Succulents and other plants that like a gritty mix forgive a missed week. They do not forgive a daily splash “just in case.” Water when the soil is dry a finger down. The small succulent already settled in our planter is a starting point, not a commitment to a greenhouse. If it outgrows the pot, move it up one size in the same clay so the look stays consistent on a step or a sill.

Group in odd numbers, then stop

Three pots of different heights read as a collection. Eight pots read as storage. Leave space for the teak chair, the watering can, and the fact that you will walk there. Plants are part of the room’s furniture. They should not block the seat you bought so you could sit outside in the first place.

When you bring clay indoors for the season, let it dry fully before it sits on bare timber. The saucer is there so the walnut and the oak do not take a ring. Care for the furniture and the plant with the same habit: look once, then leave them alone.
